Trastevere, a quarter for all the tastes

Easily reachable by tram line 8 (stop: Stazione Trastevere), Trastevere is only a short way away the Tiber (Tevere is the Italian name for Tiber, and from Latin trans Tiberim it means Over the Tiber) and it represents one of the few Rome’s quarters with typical medieval features.

It’s true that Trastevere is now quite known by the most of tourists and that some restaurants had to write their menus in English, but it has been able anyway to keep its identity. Narrow and winding streets, the most are pedestrian, offer attractions to every age tourists and visitors.

During the day and in the afternoon especially, the quarter is animated by little markets, shops of clothes, handicrafts, gastronomy, coffee bar and take-away pizzerias, among them detach ethnic restaurants which offer Asiatic cuisine and kebabs. But you can still find anyway typical and cheap confectioners, bakers and trattoria, like L’osteria Rugantino, Via della Lungaretta 54 and Cacio & Pepe, Vicolo del Cinque, 15.

During the night, for the younger and not only, streets are full of pubs and spots for all the tastes, with lounge bar e some discos.

But what attracts young people the most in this area is the happy hour (aperitif) time: young Romans and students of all nationalities, meet in the streets from 6 p.m. and crowd the several spots. One among everyone is Freni e Frizioni: this coffee bar is located just a short way away Trilussa square and it is possible to get any kind of drink for 5€. With this price you won’t only get the usual aperitif snack like crisps or crackers, but pasta, rice, couscous, bread, vegetables and fruits. An aperitif for all the tastes, especially for hardened vegetarians.

A few curiosities: in Trastevere the famous Italian actor Alberto Sordi was born and in these typically Italian streets many films were shot, both from USA and of course Italy, like Bicycle Thieves (Vittorio de Sica, 1948), Roman Holiday (William Wyler, 1953), Trastevere (Fausto Tozzi, 1971) Only you A love story written in the stars (Norman Jewison, 1994) and the recent Cuore sacro (Ferzan Opzetek, 2005).
