The Value of Getting a Good Night's Sleep

By: Michael Rupkalvis

Research shows that many people today don't get enough restful sleep. Sleep provides several benefits, but today some view sleeping as something they don't require much of, or as something they can make up on another night.

The majority of people need 6-8 hours of peaceful sleep every night to maintain optimal health.

The benefits of sufficient sleep are many.

For one thing, both research and clinical observation have shown that regularly getting a good night's sleep reduces and prevents depression. A person's brain goes into a different mode while sleeping - the brain does not stop. In the sleep mode, the brain works out problems and makes new connections that it is too distracted and busy to do in the waking state. During sleep, personal issues and other problems get resolved. But if the amount of sleep is insufficient and these problems don't get worked on as a result, depression can set in or be magnified.

There is a common sense connection between restful sleep and daytime energy levels, yet it is shocking how many people don't seem to make the connection. Sleep lets the mind unwind in order to use its subconscious to create unexplored connections and process new data. Energy is not depleted as quickly while sleeping, as compared to when one is alert and attempting to juggle the intake of new information while dealing with old information. Most of us are not aware that the physical body needs very little rest compared to what the brain requires.

With sufficient restful sleep and the heightened energy levels that result, it is only natural that one gets yet another benefit: a more balanced emotional state resulting in more positive moods during the day. One feels as if they can handle anything thrown their way when their mind has had the chance to restore itself through quality sleep.

People who get enough sleep tend to be healthier and have stronger immune systems. A good night's sleep makes us revitalized for the next day, whether it's things we do automatically or things we have to think about. A healthy brain makes a healthy body. The brain is the mastermind that controls our other body functions and keeps them in good working order.

Not only that, but research shows that the body's cells rejuvenate and replenish better and faster in people who sleep sufficiently. All the functions of the subconscious brain becomes rejuvenated while we sleep.

Getting enough sleep means you will have more happiness, a better appearance, and a greater sense of well being.

So why do so many people deny themselves the benefits of good sleep? In part it is because our society tends to devalue sleep. Many of us work too hard and getting enough sleep is being taken for granted. In actual fact, getting the proper amount of sleep is an important part of finding balance, health, and fulfillment in life.
